According to Darwin’s theory of evolution, evolution is defined as “descent with modification”. This process applies to both animal and human species, suggesting that species evolve based on natural selection.
Can the same be said about electronic devices? I would argue that yes, it can. Over time, electronics have improved dramatically, and one could say that older versions have been phased out due to a form of natural selection. If one focuses on the development of the transistor, it is evident that the technology has improved vastly over each decade.
Starting with the first “transistor,” the vacuum tube, the development of the transistor has changed the world as we know it. This improvement through digitization allows for better miniaturization, performance, cost reduction, and energy efficiency. Despite these improvements, the development of the transistor has led to complex manufacturing processes, economic disruption, and security vulnerabilities.
These improvements suggest a great future for the human race, making life easier and suggests far more innovations to come.
